Azura participated in the Girls Inc. Eureka! Program at the University of Texas at Dallas this summer. Eureka! is designed to engage girls ages 12 to 18 in exploring STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) to motivate girls to pursue post-secondary education and careers in STEM fields. The 65 volunteers this year included faculty, staff, students, and several external STEM professionals from businesses throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
The Girls Inc. girls had a great time participating in STEM activities from making lipstick to creating beautiful patterns using javascript. They also learned about bioengineering, environmental sustainability, and resource conservation. Guest speakers of the program included a Texas Instrument engineer and Azura’s CEO and Senior Scientist, Amy Whitt. Amy presented “Fins & Flukes ~ How I Became a Marine Biologist” about her own experience becoming a marine biologist and also introduced the girls to the variety of career paths for marine biologists.
