Azura joins the marine science and conservation community in mourning the passing of Dr. James “Buddy” Powell — a pioneering marine biologist, visionary conservationist, and generous mentor whose influence on marine mammal science and protection will be felt for generations.

Buddy dedicated his life to the study and conservation of manatees and other marine mammals, shaping research, policy, and public awareness around the world. As founder and Executive Director of Sea to Shore Alliance — an organization Azura was proud to support as a client — he built impactful programs that advanced research, habitat protection, and community engagement on a global scale.
Beyond his groundbreaking scientific work, Buddy was known for his kindness, compassion, and unwavering support of colleagues and students. Many of us at Azura were fortunate to benefit from his mentorship — whether through a thoughtful conversation about field protocols, advice on running a project, or simply a check-in to ask about our families. He had a remarkable gift for connecting people, and many of the professional collaborations and lifelong friendships within our field exist because of him.
Buddy’s scientific legacy is extraordinary, but it is his warmth, generosity of spirit, and belief in the power of collaboration that we will remember most. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues — and we will continue to honor his life’s work through our own efforts to protect marine species and their habitats.
