Azura has joined forces with Versar, Inc. and the Virginia Aquarium to provide natural resources management services in support of sea turtle nest management at military installations in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Our team is conducting this project under the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Biological Services Contract to GMI/AECOM Joint Venture. We are supporting four military installations including the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Naval Air Station Oceana Dam Neck Annex, and Virginia Army National Guard Camp Pendleton. In accordance with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) guidelines, our team is conducting lighting surveys along the beaches of each installation to document any light sources that may negatively impact nesting sea turtles and/or their offspring. We are also preparing Biological Assessments (BAs) to assess the management of sea turtle nests and relocation protocols at these installations. These BAs will be submitted to the USFWS and provide the information necessary for compliance with Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act.
